Paying off debt is a lot easier when you can see your progress. A debt tracker turns a stressful pile of balances into a clear plan you can follow, one payment at a time. On this page you can choose the free debt tracker that fits how you like to work: a printable debt tracker PDF for your fridge or binder, a debt tracker template for Excel and Google Sheets, or our free online debt tracker app. All three were created in Canada by the non-profit Credit Counselling Society, and all three are completely free. Printable Debt Tracker PDF
Sometimes paper is the most powerful tool there is. Our debt tracker printable is designed to go somewhere you’ll see it every day, like the fridge, a bulletin board or the front of a binder. Print as many copies as you need.
Inside this debt tracker PDF you’ll find:
- A debt list for up to nine debts, with space for interest rates, minimum payments and balances
- A payoff tracker you colour in for every 10 percent of debt you pay off
- A full page payment log to record every payment you make
- Monthly check-in boxes so you can see six months of progress at a glance
- A spot to write down your “why” and the reward you’re working toward
The colouring-in part isn’t just for fun. Research on goal setting shows that making progress visible keeps motivation high, and our credit counsellors see it every day: people who can see their debt shrinking are far more likely to stick with their plan.
Debt Tracker for Excel and Google Sheets
If you’d rather let formulas do the math, our debt tracker Excel template is for you. It also works as a debt tracker Google Sheets version: just upload the file to Google Drive, open it, and choose File, then Save as Google Sheets. Every formula works in both programs.
This debt tracker template includes four tabs:
- Start Here gives you simple instructions and a colour legend
- My Debts lists up to 15 debts with automatic balances, paid off percentages and progress bars
- Payment Log records every payment with a handy dropdown, so nothing gets mistyped
- Monthly Progress shows a two year, month by month view of your payoff journey
Only the yellow cells need your input. Everything else calculates itself, including your total paid, your estimated balances and your overall progress. It’s the easiest way to run a pay off debt tracker without building a spreadsheet from scratch.
Free Debt Tracker App: My Debt Journey
Want your debt tracker online, on any device, with the math done for you? My Debt Journey is a free debt tracker app that runs right in your browser. There’s nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and your information stays private on your own device.
With the app you can:
- See your projected debt free date, and watch it move closer as you pay extra
- Check in once a month and track whether you’re ahead of or behind your plan
- Record “snowflake” payments, those little extra amounts that speed everything up
- Celebrate milestones along the way instead of waiting until the very end
It pairs perfectly with our Debt Repayment Calculator, which builds your payoff plan, while My Debt Journey keeps you on track month after month.
Choose How You Use It
Which Debt Tracker Is Right for You?
| You want to... | Best choice | Why |

There's no wrong answer, and plenty of people use more than one. A popular combo: run the app for the math, and keep the printable on the fridge for the whole household to see.
How to Use a Debt Payoff Tracker (in 4 Simple Steps)
- List every debt. Credit cards, lines of credit, loans, buy now pay later balances, money owed to family. Write down the balance, interest rate and minimum payment for each. Seeing the full picture can feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s the moment your plan begins.
- Pick a payoff strategy. The avalanche method targets your highest interest rate first and saves the most money. The snowball method targets your smallest balance first and builds momentum with quick wins. Either works, as long as you keep going. Learn more about both methods.
- Log every payment. This is where a debt payment tracker earns its keep. Each entry is proof that you’re moving forward, even in months when it feels slow.
- Check in monthly and celebrate milestones. Update your balances, colour in your tracker or watch your progress bar grow, and reward yourself (inexpensively!) at 25%, 50% and 75% paid.
Why Tracking Your Debt Works
Our credit counsellors have helped Canadians pay off debt for decades, and one pattern shows up over and over: what gets tracked gets paid. Debt feels heaviest when it’s vague. When you can see exact balances, exact payments and an actual finish line, the anxiety shrinks and the motivation grows. A debt tracker also catches problems early. If your balances aren’t moving even though you’re making payments, that’s a sign interest is eating your progress, and it may be time to look at other options.

Does the debt tracker template work in Google Sheets?

Is there a debt tracker made for Canada?
Yes, you’re looking at it. If you searched for “debt tracker Canada”, you’ve found one built here at home. These trackers were created in Canada by the Credit Counselling Society, and our free advice line connects you with counsellors who understand Canadian debts, from credit cards and lines of credit to payday loans and CRA balances.
What's the difference between a debt tracker and a debt calculator?
A calculator builds your plan by showing how long payoff will take and how much interest you’ll pay. A tracker keeps you on that plan by recording real payments and real progress month after month. Our Debt Repayment Calculator and the trackers on this page are designed to work together.
Can I print the PDF more than once?
What if tracking shows my debt isn't going down?
That’s important information, not a failure. If interest is swallowing your payments, there are options that can help, like a Debt Management Program that can reduce or eliminate interest. Call us at 1-888-527-8999 for a free, confidential review of your situation.
