Find Out Exactly How We Can Help
by Answering 4 Simple Questions
Not sure where to start in finding help for your specific financial situation? Answer these 4 easy multiple-choice questions to get pointed in the right direction. All you have to do is click the boxes that apply to you and then the green button when you're done.
The Next Steps From Here
Once you’ve completed our Questionnaire or called our toll-free number, here are the next steps we’ll take toward helping you solve your financial concerns:
- When you speak with one of our debt or credit counselling specialists during a confidential one-on-one, free appointment, you’ll provide details about your current financial situation, including your income, monthly expenses, assets, and the secured and unsecured debts you have.
- With what you tell your credit counsellor, they’ll review your current financial position and explain which debt management or debt consolidation programs will work best. We’ll walk you through the pros and cons of each and give you as much time as you need to decide on the right one for your situation.
- If you decide that our Debt Management Program (DMP) is best for you, your counsellor will contact your creditors and put a plan in place that lowers or eliminates interest charges going forward with a monthly payment that suits your budget. Once your credit counsellor starts putting a plan in place, you can explain that to debt collectors so that they stop persistently calling your home or work.
- Once the details of your DMP have been worked out, you will be required to pay a monthly payment to us, which will be distributed to your creditors, ensuring you can pay off your debts without hassle.
- If a DMP isn’t right for your situation, your credit counsellor will help you identify other options and solutions. Most people don’t know about some of the options your counsellor will share with you but everything from how to position yourself for a debt consolidation loan, to a debt settlement, legal solutions through the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, what to do when you really can’t pay your debts, or why a HELOC isn’t the best option for most people who want to get rid of their debt. If you’ve got questions, your counsellor has answers, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

It’s Okay to Ask for Help with Debt
“Life just happened. My debt got to the point where I started to feel like I was drowning. I didn’t feel like I could fix it on my own, and I wanted to start living my life as an adult without debt. I decided to reach out for help. Feeling relieved, I knew that everything was going to be okay – a lot of work – but okay. I had a plan to pay back my debt and continue doing the things I love to do like yoga and travelling.”

About Our Credit Counselling & Debt Counselling BC Services
The Credit Counselling Society has offered non-profit consumer credit counselling for over 25 years. 95% of Canadians who get in touch with us get the help they need without being charged a cent.
How Our Debt Management Program Works
While most of our services are free, if our Debt Management Program is right for you, there will be some minimal administrative costs. In this program, we consolidate all of your credit card and other unsecured debt payments into a single monthly payment that you can afford. These payments are made to us, and then we disburse monthly payments to your creditors, simplifying the process for you immensely.
In addition, this debt consolidation service will eliminate or drastically reduce all credit card and debt interest charges going forward. While our assistance helps eliminate debt, allows you to re-establish your credit, protects your privacy, and gets your finances back in order as fast as possible, it’s just one of several ways we can help. We truly believe that the best debt consolidation in BC is a solution that enables someone to get back on the right track as soon as possible while helping them accomplish their long-term financial goals.
Our approach differs greatly from some commission-focused debt advisors, credit consultants, financial counsellors, and credit advisors. However, we firmly believe that when someone is having a difficult time financially, they need to carefully consider all options available and concentrate on what will most help them in the long term. This is why we don’t pay any of our staff commission – only straight salaries. And no fee to you for the information and guidance we provide.
In addition, to ensure our organization meets the highest national and international standards, we decided to join the most respected organizations in our industry in Canada and North America. We open ourselves to their audits in order to remain accountable to our peers and clients. We report to a volunteer board of directors and the Canada Revenue Agency. We’re also the only Canadian organization in our industry to open its books to an external auditor every year.

BC Credit Counselling & Debt Consolidation FAQs
In simple terms, what is credit counselling, and how can it help me?
For residents across British Columbia, credit counselling is simply a service that helps you manage your money and debts and improve your overall financial future. At the Credit Counselling Society of BC, our goal is to help all our clients get out from under their debts and shift toward financial stability and self-reliance. We do this by providing guidance and information on budgeting, debt repayment strategies, credit, and more.
Is your credit counselling service really free?
Are your services confidential?
What types of debt can you help with?
Our BC credit counselling experts can assist you in handling a wide range of debts, such as:
- Credit card debt
- Personal loans
- Payday loans
- Unpaid bills (such as utilities, cell phone bills, etc.)
We focus more on unsecured debts than secured debts, but we will work with you to create a realistic budget that includes payments for your secured debts, too. Keeping up with your payments on secured debts, while making payments through CCS to your unsecured debts, can help protect your credit rating.
Does credit counselling impact my credit score?
How do I know if I need credit counselling?
There are many common signs that show when you may need to meet with one of our credit counselling specialists, including:
- Struggling to keep up with monthly payments
- Consistently relying on credit cards to pay for necessities like food, gas, electricity, etc.
- Feeling overwhelmed by debts with multiple creditors
- Losing sleep worrying about your debts and money
Overall, when you notice your biggest stresses are financial, meeting with one of our credit counsellors at the Credit Counselling Society of BC will restore your peace of mind.
Do I need to be near bankruptcy to seek debt or credit counselling?
No, our credit counselling services are available to anyone, whether they are facing financial hardship or not. In addition to helping individuals and families get a handle on their debt burdens, we seek to help everyone improve their budgeting and money management skills or prepare for the costs of a major life event, such as starting a family or moving to a new home.
Seeking advice sooner rather than later can be a great way to prepare for tough financial challenges in the future, and we wholly support this approach.
What is the difference between debt counselling and credit counselling?
Credit counselling does all of what debt counselling does, and more. Credit counselling is also about helping individuals and families manage their money and debt better. Credit counsellors will help you understand how to manage your finances effectively, create a budget, and use credit responsibly. The aim is to empower you with tools and strategies to avoid debt problems in the future, while still dealing with the debt you have.
In short, debt counselling is about helping you work out current issues with your debt, and credit counselling is about helping you learn money skills while you’re dealing with your debts so that you can avoid repeating those issues later on. Credit counsellors at CCS have got you covered; they do both, while also helping you create a stable financial future.
If I book an appointment, what should I bring to my first credit counselling session?
There are several items you should bring to your first credit counselling session with the Credit Counselling Society. Here are some of the items we recommend you have ready:
- A complete list of your debts, including how much you owe and who your creditors are
- Any recent bills or statements from your creditors
- A draft or copy of your monthly budget (if you have one set up), or a list of your expenses
- Documents regarding your income (pay stubs, insurance benefits, etc.)
While it may seem excessive, it’s an important step toward helping our counsellors provide the most accurate and tailor-made advice for your particular financial situation. But don’t stress if you don’t have it all ready for your appointment. Just do your best. We know this is a stressful situation and we don’t want to make it worse.
Ensuring Your Interests are Always First
In everything we do, our goal is to always put the interests of consumers first and do what is best for them. Two important ways we pursue this is through transparency and accountability. We are held accountable to the highest and most demanding standards in our industry.
