It’s the Thought That Counts, Not the Price Tag

Q: My wife and I got married last year, so this will be our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple. I want to do something special for her, but we’re saving up for a down payment on a condo and I don’t want to blow the budget on just one day. Help!

A: Showing someone how much they mean to you isn’t defined by how much you spend. It really comes down to asking yourself what you can do to make your spouse feel special.

Valentine's Day is on February 14 but you can show your love any day of the year.Celebrate Your Own Special Days

There are countless ways to show someone how special they are. Many couples even go as far as choosing their own special day. They may do something very small for each other on February 14, and then celebrate more at another time. This allows them to avoid the inflated prices and marketing hype that’s become all too familiar with “special days” of the year.

Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or another day that you show your wife how much you care, keep it real and within your means. Spending money that isn’t in your budget for a dozen roses, a gift and a dinner out may feel good on the 14th, but won’t feel so good when your credit card bill arrives next month.

Keep Valentine’s Day Affordable

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be an all or nothing event; you can show her the love without emptying your bank account. Here are a couple of suggestions to consider:

If your wife really loves roses, buy her roses and then treat her to a special home-made dinner. Look for a recipe that you wouldn’t normally cook, and when it comes time to eat, set a candle-lit table for two.

If dinner out is the right touch, look for something out of the ordinary that isn’t likely to be as crowded or as expensive and give her a single red rose to set on the table. Besides, it’s too hard to carry on a conversation with a dozen roses on the table.

Money Won’t Buy Love

As you plan what to do, think about what you can do to show that you love and care for your wife, that you value her for who she is and for what she brings to your life together. Don’t lose sight of the fact that it really is the thought that counts, and to quote the Beatles “Money Can’t Buy Me (You) Love.”
