November is Financial Literacy Month!
The theme for 2024 is “Money on your mind, talk about it!”
By the CCS Team
November is Financial Literacy Month! This year’s theme for FLM, “Money on your mind, talk about it!” is raising awareness around communicating openly about finances. Debt, money, and financial struggles have long been seen as something shrouded in shame and secrecy. While trends on social media such as Loud Budgeting and the Buy Nothing Movement are encouraging a more transparent and open approach to conversations about money, there’s still a long way to go. That’s why we’re so excited about this year’s theme!
Talking openly about your finances without fearing judgement or shame is an excellent way to improve your financial literacy and find guidance and solutions around debts, savings, improved money management, and more. Read on to learn more about #FLM2024 and some of CCS’s resources, initiatives, and contests that we’ll be sharing all month long.

What is Financial Literacy Month?
For those who may be less familiar with it, Financial Literacy Month (FLM) is a national campaign led by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). Working to advance the goals of the National Financial Literacy Strategy 2021-2026, the annual initiative aims to make the financial ecosystem more accessible, inclusive, and effective for all Canadians.
During the month of November, the FCAC engages with Canadians and works together with organizations from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to help strengthen the financial literacy of Canadians and build their financial resilience. So, this month, keep an eye out for social media posts from the FCAC but also from CCS and other trusted financial organizations.
Tips to Reduce Financial Stress and Cope Better
Why is Financial Literacy So Important?
You may be wondering why financial literacy is so important. What’s the big deal? Financial literacy is a crucial skill because the more financially literate you are, the easier it is to successfully manage your own money and financial obligations. Learning about personal finance and seeking advice from reliable financial experts and sources can also help you to make informed decisions that contribute to long-term financial stability.
New to Money Management? Fin Lit is Especially Important
If you’re new to managing your own money, or you’re gaining money skills in a new country, ‘fin lit’ is especially important because those just getting started with managing their finances – i.e. students, young adults, and newcomers to Canada – can be more vulnerable to ‘quick fix’ solutions, financial traps, and scams. A healthy amount of financial literacy can also help avoid these less than healthy ‘solutions’ to financial problems.
Financial Literacy to Boost Your Financial Confidence
Another aim of FLM is to boost Canadians’ financial confidence. So, this month, the FCAC is encouraging individuals to take steps in that direction, for example:
- Checking their credit score
- Talking to a friend about budgeting
- Reaching out to a professional individual or organization for financial guidance
- During the campaign you can also engage in conversations on social media with the #MoneyOnYourMind challenge.

Money on Your Mind. Talk About It!
Now in its 14th year, the 2024 theme of “Money on Your Mind. Talk About It!” aims is to help remove the stigma around conversations about money by encouraging Canadians to share their financial experiences on social media with the hashtag #MoneyOnYourMind.
Trying to downplay or hide your financial problems makes it much more challenging to reach out for help and repair the issues. CCS speaks with individuals and families every day who reach out to us for help. If you’re struggling or have questions, you are not alone, and you do not need to be afraid to talk about money.
